Deciding what to wear to your family portrait session can be tough. Choosing the right outfits can make a significant impact on the final results. After all our goal is to create images that can last on your walls forever.
There are certain choices that I find work best for family photos. Here are some ideas and tips on what to wear to your session:
** And don't worry though... If you have any questions at all about what to wear for your session we can chat on the phone, send images of your outfits, or face time to go over what your options are. So don't stress, I got you!**
What clothes look good in family photos?
The best outfits for family photos are generally simple, timeless, classic pieces of clothing. Solid fabrics and subtle patterns. Textured, natural fabrics like knits, tweeds, or even clothing with a sheen. A touch of lace or leather can also be great. Textures add depth. Keep it Timeless: Aim for outfits that won't look outdated in a few years. Classic styles and neutral tones tend to stand the test of time.
Paying Attention to the Fit:
Well-fitted clothing tends to look more polished and flattering in photos. Avoid oversized or ill-fitting outfits, tailored outfits can make a significant difference in the final outcome. Make sure to try the outfits on a few days before the family session to ensure they fit well and look cohesive. Nothing worse than the day of the session and realizing that jacket no longer fits or noticing the shirt you were planning to wear has a big stain on it.
What colours look good in family photos?
Coordinate Colors: Select a colour palette that complements each other and fits the overall mood of the session. Consider colours that work well together, such as soft pastels, earth tones, jewel tones, or a mix of complementary shades. Avoid overly bold or clashing colours. My personal favourites are earth tones or jewel tones!
Accessories to wear for family portraits?
Accessories can add a pop of personality and style to your outfits and make an outfit look more complete. Consider using accessories like jewelry, hair accessories, hats, or belts to enhance your overall look. Just ensure they complement the outfits and don't overpower them.
What Shoes to Wear in Family Photos?
Shoes can often be overlooked but can have a big impact on the overall look. Choose footwear that complements the outfits and fits the chosen style. Coordinate shoe colours and styles among family members to maintain cohesiveness. I often recommend darker shoes as they will not distract from the rest of the image. I love a good leather shoe or short boot personally. Also, ones that match the location ie. if we're doing a session in the woods then stilettos might not make sense.
What not to wear in family photos.
I suggest avoiding bold, bright colours, busy prints, logos, clothing with high-contrast patterns, and any words. Whenever there are words in a photograph our brain wants to read it, so it takes away from your family when you have any sort of words or logos. Hoodies are also not something I'd recommend as they're bulky at the neck and compete with a person's head.
But most importantly…
Consider these merely guidelines if you’re looking for some direction. After all, these are YOUR family photos and I want you to wear what you feel great in. I want you to incorporate your own personalities into your wardrobe choices.
The most important thing is that your portraits reflect who you are.
